CLC Elementary Robotics Team Takes Top Prize

The Clear Lake City Elementary Thunderbotz Lego League Robotics Team won the first place trophy for innovative solution in a research presentation at the Lone Star FLL Championship Robotics Tournament held on Saturday, January 10th. They were competing against 91 other teams to win the award.

The team selected local flooding in the Clear Lake City area for their research. Information was provided by CLCWA Director John Branch concerning the flooding study conducted by the Water Authority and the action they took to acquire the former Clear Lake Golf Club property for the purpose of installing detention ponds to reduce home and street flooding.

Teacher/sponsor Kari Euker said the team researched detention ponds and how they can be built for dual use to include recreational amenities. Team members developed a survey and web posting to collect ideas from the community on what youth and adults would like to see designed into the concept.

 

In addition to the research, the team programmed robots to simulate the implementation of solutions for flooding and other climate related issues. These youth are to be commended for their initiative, desire to learn, and contributions to make their community a better place.
